Gym Nerd: Photo #264

Today is Day 18 of The Month of Living Healthfully.

Don’t get me wrong – I love our gym.  Its big, it has a cafe and an olympic sized indoor pool, it boasts completely private showers (in the women’s locker room, anyway) and is filled mostly with families which is good for people like me who get intimidated easily in a group exercise setting.  But something has been bugging me for a while, and now that the gym and I are spending a lot more time together I couldn’t let it slide any longer.  You see, there are two areas with cardio machines – the main one upstairs, and a much smaller one downstairs.  I prefer the small room downstairs because it is cozier and, maybe because you don’t have to go up the stairs (yes – i know I’m there to get exercise – don’t judge me!).  Each machine in the small room has a personal TV with a little control box that you plug your earphones into.  Unfortunately, it seems like every time I try a machine, the audio doesn’t work properly.  It got so that I knew that the third elliptical machine from the wall was the one I could go to and count on being able to hear the TV and I’d try to get that unit each time I worked out.  That plan works fine until some inconsiderate person is already hogging MY preferred machine.

That happened today, and I ended up trying almost every machine in the room until I found one that I didn’t have to hold my earphones just a certain way to get sound.  It pushed me over the edge.  So after my work-out I went to every machine in the room and tested the audio so I could make a little diagram to give to the staff.  I figure if I’m paying to be here and use their equipment, I have a reasonable expectation that it should work properly or be fixed in a timely manner.  And how will the gym know to fix something if no one tells them its broken?  I showed my diagram to Randy and he just smiled, shook his head and said: “of course you made a diagram”.   (By the way, the machines are labled G for Good Audio and B for Bad Audio.  I plan to clean it up and maybe make it a Word document before sharing it with the staff.)
